Tissue Culture Speeds Up Quality Paulownia Seedling Production

January 2026 · Propagation Technology

Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), through its Biotechnology Research Institute, is working with a local cooperative to produce high-quality paulownia seedlings using plant tissue culture — the latest example of how biotechnology-based propagation is maturing into standard practice for paulownia plantation supply chains.

Why tissue culture matters for paulownia

Seedlings are the material basis of afforestation. Seedling quality directly affects survival rate, early growth, and resistance to diseases and pests after planting — and ultimately the cost and success of the whole plantation. Unlike conventional propagation, tissue culture enables rapid multiplication of genetically uniform, healthy and vigorous planting material under controlled conditions.

From laboratory to field

The UMS project aims to establish a complete value chain: from tissue-culture seedling production, to field cultivation, to downstream uses such as timber and biomass. University partners describe it as moving biotechnology beyond scientific discovery into practical pathways for community development.

Our perspective

We have propagated our Shan Tong hybrid varieties asexually for decades — tissue culture and root-based propagation are exactly how non-invasive hybrids should be multiplied. But we also remind every partner of the same principle: a perfect seedling planted with the wrong technique still fails. Site preparation, planting depth, watering and early tending decide survival far more than the laboratory that produced the plant. That is why our technical services cover the full chain from propagation to harvest.
